Choosing the right home for you
Making the decision to move into aged care is a significant, and sometimes stressful decision. There’s much to consider for the loved one and families, but where do you begin?
We’ve put together a list of a few things to think about when selecting an aged care home.
Access to medical care
Ask about the access the home has to medical support. It is regular, on call, and do they have arrangements for your own healthcare team to attend the residence?
Tour with family and friends
When looking at residences, be sure to take loved ones with you. Having trusted advisors with you can be helpful to remember and ask the right questions, or to watch for the small details which might be important to you later. A second opinion may well be invaluable.
Staffing levels
The level of support and care you receive is one of the most important facotrs in selecting a home. Ask your prospective residence if they have a registered nurse available 24/7, or how many staff are shared between residents.
Check Compliance
Every aged care provider is required to meet government regulations and standards to protect the safety, health, wellbeing and quality of life for people using aged care services. You can check the service complince rating of a propsective home on the My Aged Care website, using the find a provider tool. You can also view historical information using the non-compliance checker.
Staff Skills
Alongside staffing levels, make sure you ask for more information regarding the experience and qualifications for the team looking after you. This is particularly important when looking at dementia friendly care.
Look at the lifestyle
Moving into a new home is about more than just the facilities and staff. Find out about the lifestyle programs on offer. Do they look interesting, and will they add to your quality of life?
