Punching Above Our Weight

The team at Woodford Manor always encourages residents to try new things and have a go, but even they didn’t know how successful the new boxing club would be.

Lifestyle Coordinator, Lee-Ann, is passionate about boxing, following in the footsteps of her son Connor, who spent six years as an amateur boxer.

Keen to share the benefits of the sweet science, Lee-ann developed a program to help residents with their coordination, memory skills, and social interaction.

Lee-ann, who is also a boxing instructor, says, ‘The drills not only help improve strength and balance, but the twice weekly classes are also a lot of fun’.

As their skills and confidence grew, the boxing club hatched a plan to take the club on the road and bring the joy to other aged care homes, hoping to inspire residents to pull on the mitts and reap the rewards.

First stop was sister home, Burpengary Manor, where they received a lovely warm welcome as they showcased their skills. Then it was on to World Gym Burpengary where residents had a chance to try out their fancy footwork in a proper boxing ring.

Plans are afoot to next visit Narangba Aged Care and with our sprightly boxers aged between 74 and 94, this is one aged care home that can pack a punch.
